Deep Tissue vs Swedish Massage: Which Should You Book?

Both are full-body oil massages, but they feel very different. Here is how to pick the right one for how your body feels today.

Both are full-body oil massages, but they feel very different. Here is how to pick the right one for how your body feels today.

Swedish massage: gentle and flowing

Swedish massage uses long gliding strokes, kneading and light rhythmic movements. Pressure stays light to medium, so it is the best choice for stress relief, a first-ever massage, or simply switching off after a long week.

Deep tissue massage: slow and focused

Deep tissue massage works slower and firmer, using forearms, knuckles and sustained pressure on specific areas such as the shoulders, neck and lower back. It suits people with stubborn knots from desk work, driving or training.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Swedish if your goal is relaxation and you prefer a softer touch. Choose deep tissue if you have specific tight spots and are comfortable with firm pressure. Not sure? Book Swedish and ask your therapist to work deeper on problem areas — pressure can always be adjusted.

After your session

Drink water, avoid heavy exercise for the rest of the day, and expect deep tissue work to leave muscles feeling tender for a day or so. That is normal and usually settles quickly.
